Day 3 - Village of Hope and YSU

This morning we woke up still powerless – electrically, but after breakfast and our morning devotion we felt empowered for the day’s activities. We were excited in anticipation of finally meeting the children, the reason we are all here!

We walked to the Village of Hope again, but this time we were very enthusiastically greeted at the gate by all the children, with home-made welcome signs, big grins on their faces, and hugs for all of us – a very special moment. As we made our way down the drive, we had 2 or 3 of the children attach themselves to each of us, and we went to the meeting room where we were officially welcomed by Rhoda the Village Social Worker. The children then took each of us for a tour of the village grounds, allowing us to get to know them a bit. We then gathered back in the hall for a full welcome, with two groups of children performing a dance for us and singing some (very meaningful) songs. One girl sang a song (with tears in her eyes) about Jesus being a daddy to those who have no daddy and mummy, making us tear up as well. Another girl led us in prayer.

Each team member was then accompanied by 2 or 3 children to a quiet, shady spot in the village to share the dreams of the children and the team member. It was a blessed moment to spend time in prayer with the children, praying for them and having them pray for us.

Some ‘all-in’ games led by Amelia & Nadia, and Taime & Andy had us all running and mixing together. We had to say good-bye for the day, as we headed back to Suubi for lunch. (thankfully, the power was back on).

After lunch we were bussed to YSU, and were introduced to the staff and participants, including Susan, the social worker, and Mercy (Agnes’ sister) who leads the sewing groups. A robust game of volleyball followed (for some). A spontaneous walk to Lake Victoria for some of the team was met with an enthusiastic bunch of little children, another emotional moment. Other members of the team were shown round YSU, tried on the colorful clothing made by the ladies, and bought some.

Back home after dinner, a meaningful debrief meeting had us sharing our feelings, impressions of the trip so far. Now for a good night’s sleep!
