Uganda team 19 - Day 5

Day 5
The day started, with a number of early morning activities, a before breakfast group Pilates session on the roof or a brisk run around the block or up Monkey Mountain. For the rest of us a “get up just in time for breakfast” was the order of the day.
Breakfast was on the sun deck. For the first time there were Rolexes left over. Either this was a sign of Juliet over catering or the start of rolex fatigue. We said goodbye to Emily, an Australian on leave from Midwifery, who had been staying at Suubi House and had been working with women groups in the area, teaching them on the subject of women’s health and pregnancy.
After Breakfast we all piled into the van and travelled back to Home of Hope to continue building and working and playing with the kids.
Building started with breaking rocks to make base for the floor, barrowing them up a narrow bridge on to slim boards across an earthen floor and then dumping them to be placed in a single layer to form the base.
Once the base was completed concrete was then mixed Ugandan style. Sand was piled in a heap on top goes “binding” sand and on top goes the cement. Then mixing was a process of moving the sand from one pile to another and back again until all the cement was mixed in. The pile was then flattened and on top goes barrow loads of a very coarse aggregate. Then comes the water.
Water at Home of Hope comes from a hand pump bore which you have to pump vigorously to fill containers that are then carried to the work site. The bore also caters for a primary school next door and working at the pump is more a social experience rather than a physical one. The whole school comes to watch and help during their recess breaks. “Muzungu what is your name?” and, “Muzungu how are you?”, are regular greetings from the school children.
Over the last 2 days of working close to the school the Team has got more and more involved, with Ben and Nathan sitting in on classes and Maddie and Josie playing impromptu games with the senior girls.
Once all the water was carried, the concrete mixed and barrowed on top of the bricks, and concrete mixture stamped into place, the floor was finished just in time for lunch.
Edith and the Home of Hope turned on lunch for the Hopebuilders Team and Emma and his building team. Lunch consisted of vegetable rice and beans. Very tasty and very nutritious.
After lunch Emma and his building team taught the Hopebuilders Team to lay bricks. Thanks to their patience and teaching skill the walls got finished up to the top of the windows. Robert Kafeero declared job well done and we called it a day.
All during the day while the building was going on, other members of the Team worked with the kids at the Home of Hope helping the staff to run the children through their exercise programs, playing with them, changing them, feeding them, but above all just loving them.
Back at Suubi House the Team relaxed satisfied of a job well done.    – Charles..

Uganda team 19 Day 4

Day 4
Another emotional day for the team. After another filling breakfast provided to us by Juliet and Peace. The rolex are amazing and some frequent visitors to Suubi House have said we would be sick of them in 2 days. Not likely to happen!!!!

After breakfast we headed out to the Home of Hope for a morning of hard work on the tools with the kitchen or spending time with the kids. Although it was our second day there some of the group still found it difficult entering the home but are doing an amazing job outside building the kitchen in the hot sun. Kitchen should be finished by the end of the week.

Some of the work done with the kids are exercises by stretching, strengthening  or just simply being with them stroking their limbs. Others have been involved in taking them for a walk outside . The team at Home of Hope are an amazing group that have opened their hearts to help these kids.

Back to Suubi for another delicious lunch of freshly baked rolls and bread with the best ever coleslaw we have tasted and fresh avocados from the trees outside that are the size of emu eggs.

After lunch we headed off to the slums and witnessed extreme poverty. There are approximately 10,000 people that live in the slum we visited. We were met by Lucy who gave us an oversight . We broke into groups of 3 or 4 and had an interpreter with us. We visited 3 houses each group . We entered the house and asked questions about how many children, how long they have lived there etc.

Bus trip home was very quiet as we tried to process what we had seen. To debrief we met as a group and discussed how we felt and the following words were used to describe our feelings;
Sadness, anger, overwhelmed, confused, feeling blessed and uplifted, inadequate, compassion.

Experiencing the slums was a confronting experience that we stay with us forever and in some ways may change some perspectives in our own lives.

Day 3 Uganda team 19

DAY 3:
On a gorgeous Monday morning we woke up with rain beating down for some Chipatis and Rolexs and had a lovely breakfast, but because it was raining we had to eat inside. At 9:00am we left Suubi House and headed for the ‘Home of Hope’ in a packed van. We arrived there and made our way inside while the rain cleared. One of the workers there, Edith told us the story of her son and his disability from Meningitis and that how he had passed away, sadly and that he is now living with God. So this inspired her to start up the ‘Home of Hope’, which is a home for severely disabled children. We walked through the house – this was a surprising, confronting and sad experience seeing all of the kids disabilities. After that, half of us split up to either start building the new kitchen out the back or do some activities with the children. Today for the kitchen, we dug the trench for the foundation and finished the initial layer of bricks. The staff made us a spaghetti meal, which we stopped for then got back into work. We came home tired and exhausted after a long days work. Then we relaxed after our eventful day.

Uganda team 19 Day 2

Day 2
Today was the first Sunday of our trip.  We didn’t have our regular rolexes for breakfast because the girls have Sundays off work, which means we had to make our own breakfast, but we had cereal and toast so it wasn’t too hard to make.
Church started at 10:00 sharp, but we were two minutes late because we were having a lovely walk up the road on a beautiful, sunny morning. Church went for two hours and ten minutes, the first forty-five minutes were songs and dancing and the rest was the talking bit, including the dedication of a baby. And then we had a one-hour sermon on perseverance!
We then met up with new friends and walked back to Suubi house, to make lunch, which we also had to make our selves. In the afternoon it began to rain, we were going to go to the village for a visit, but we ended up playing a lot of card games. That night, because we the girls weren’t there to cook for us, we decided to go to a restaurant for dinner. The food was very good there, even though we had to wait a while, and we all had a good time together.

Tomorrow we will go to Home of Hope and begin some work and see the kids...

Greetings... Ben!

Uganda team 19 begins!!

TEAM 19 HITS UGANDA!

After an epic plane trip, we arrived safely at Suubi house after a VERY long and bumpy bus ride from Entebbe after our flight from Dubai. We were very exhausted and crashed into bed straight after about 30 hours of travel and a quick dinner, (beans rice and irish potatoes - yum!)!  This would be the quietest night at Suubi house for the next 3 weeks!!!

A late and slow start to the day was the plan with a luxury 9am breakfast of fresh fruit and rolex (egg and veggie omelette rolled up in chapatti). After morning devotions at Village of Hope, we spent some time playing with the children and meeting the mothers. The boys got into quite a serious soccer match with the children where the kids skill showed them up. We  went back to Suubi house for a lunch of fresh bread rolls and salad, then piled 18 of us into a 12 seater van to explore the town of Jinja. In Jinja we had the opportunity to get some money out, check out some local markets and sample one of Andrew’s favourite cafés. After another squishy ride in a different 12 seater bus (ours broke down!), we returned to have some quiet time before a dinner of good old spaghetti.

Check out a couple of photos of our day below...
